Senior Business Intelligence Engineer (Contractor) SQL Server & Tableau | Healthicity / Compliancy Group Position Overview We are looking for a Senior Business Intelligence Engineer to join our team as the primary steward of our SQL Server and Tableau reporting platform during a critical phase of modernization. This is fundamentally a SQL Server engineering role with Tableau operational responsibilities — not a front-end BI or dashboard design position. The person stepping into this role inherits a well-documented, mid-rollout architecture remediation effort and will be responsible for carrying that work across the finish line. The dominant workload is production report delivery for 100+ per-client Tableau workbooks built on a small set of core templates — primarily static, print-format client reports, not complex interactive analytics. Alongside that operational responsibility, the role owns ongoing SQL Server engineering work including a SQL Server 2016’2025 migration in flight, optimized view and indexing architecture in active deployment, and a GitHub-based automation pipeline for workbook duplication and publishing. The right candidate brings deep SQL Server expertise first, sound Tableau operational skills second, and a track record of maintaining and extending production systems responsibly — ideally with familiarity in healthcare data environments. What You’ll Inherit A SQL Server 2016→2025 migration in flight, requiring hands-on schema and compatibility work. An optimized view and indexing architecture (replacing a legacy cross-join/view-based design) that is 27 clients into a broader rollout — you’ll be completing that deployment and maintaining the architecture going forward. A GitHub-based workbook duplication and publish pipeline built on Python, tabcmd/REST API, and GitHub Actions, which you will operate, extend, and own. Extract scheduling configured against a production OLTP database, with no change-tracking infrastructure — each refresh is a full data pull, and managing that load responsibly is a live concern. New Relic-based refresh and performance monitoring that you’ll use to detect and respond to issues proactively. A parallel in-app reporting migration (Penthara) that is progressively replacing the Tableau workload — your role includes supporting that transition without disruption to clients. Key Responsibilities SQL Server Engineering (Primary) Design, develop, and optimize complex T-SQL queries, views, stored procedures, and data models for large-scale production reporting workloads. Drive execution plan analysis, indexing strategy, and statistics maintenance to maintain performance standards across 100+ client environments. Lead and execute the ongoing SQL Server 2016→2025 migration, including schema changes, compatibility validation, and performance regression testing. Maintain and extend the optimized view and indexing architecture mid-deployment, ensuring integrity and consistency as it rolls out to remaining clients. Manage extract scheduling against the production OLTP database and work to minimize compounding load from full refreshes. Tableau Platform Operations Operate and extend the GitHub-based workbook duplication and publish pipeline (Python, tabcmd/REST API, GitHub Actions), including per-client customizations and release management. Maintain and deploy Tableau workbooks across development, UAT, and production environments, supporting the existing library of ~100 per-client report copies built from 10 core templates. Manage Tableau Server administration including extract scheduling, server health, upgrades, and security governance. Monitor platform performance via New Relic; respond to and root-cause extract failures, timeouts, or refresh degradation proactively. Support the transition of report production from Tableau to the in-app reporting platform (Penthara), ensuring continuity and quality throughout. Cross-Functional Partnership Partner with Data Engineering, Infrastructure, and Business teams on root-cause analysis, platform modernization, and architectural decisions. Work closely with existing TTN/Penthara engineering partners who have deep domain familiarity with the data and platform. Communicate clearly and credibly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders on performance, risk, and progress. Required Qualifications 5+ years designing and optimizing SQL Server solutions (T-SQL, stored procedures, views, indexing) for large-scale, production reporting workloads. 3+ years developing and administering Tableau across development, UAT, and production environments. Demonstrated expertise in execution plan analysis, query tuning, and indexing strategy. Hands-on experience with SQL Server version migrations and schema modernization. Proficiency with GitHub, version control, and deployment automation in a production reporting context. Experience with Python scripting for automation (tabcmd/REST API or similar publishing pipelines). Proven track record leading performance optimization and reliability initiatives with measurable results. Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to communicate clearly with both technical and business stakeholders. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience. Preferred Skills Experience working with OLTP production databases in a reporting/extract context. Familiarity with New Relic or comparable monitoring tooling for BI platform observability. Background in healthcare data, compliance reporting, or multi-tenant client environments. Experience supporting parallel platform migrations (e.g., transitioning report production to an application layer). Dimensional data modeling (star and snowflake schemas). Tableau Server backup, disaster recovery, and upgrade management. What Success Looks Like The SQL Server 2016→2025 migration advances on schedule with no client-facing regressions. The optimized view and indexing architecture completes its rollout to all clients and remains stable under operational load. The GitHub-based publishing pipeline is reliable, well-documented, and extended as needed without introducing fragility. Reporting is fast, accurate, and trusted: dashboards load quickly, extracts refresh reliably, and clients and internal stakeholders have confidence in the data. The transition to in-app reporting proceeds smoothly, with the Tableau platform running well for as long as it remains in service. Cross-functional partners experience this role as a clear, collaborative problem-solver who takes ownership and raises the bar on operational quality.
