JOB POSTING: Senior Headless E-Commerce Developer (Next.js & Medusa.js)
Position: Lead Full-Stack Developer / Architect (Contract to Retainer)
Location: Remote
Stack: Next.js, Medusa.js (v2), Tailwind CSS, PostgreSQL, Render, Vercel
Project Management: Linear.app
ABOUT THE PROJECT
We are transitioning an established, multi-brand retail and wholesale e-commerce portfolio away from a monolithic architecture to a cutting-edge, decoupled headless infrastructure.
We are not building five completely separate websites from scratch. Instead, we are building a unified commerce engine powered by Medusa.js (backend) that connects to 2 to 3 highly optimized, master Next.js templates (B2C Retail, High-Risk/Specialized B2C, and Gated B2B Wholesale).
Our goal is to create a "plug-and-play" model where we can easily clone a master template, swap out styling configurations and assets, link it to a specific Medusa Sales Channel, and launch a brand-new storefront with zero custom backend coding.
Note: We already have an in-house automation specialist handling our n8n integrations and data pipelines. You will focus exclusively on the core e-commerce backend (Medusa) and frontend templates (Next.js), collaborating with our automation engineer to expose clean webhooks and API endpoints.
CORE DELIVERABLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Unified, Multi-Tenant Backend (Medusa.js)
Set up, configure, and secure a single Medusa.js instance on Render (utilizing managed PostgreSQL) to handle multiple storefronts using native Sales Channels.
Configure multi-region tax rules, currency routing, inventory groups, and gated pricing lists for B2B/Wholesale accounts.
Strict Guideline: Zero custom e-commerce plumbing. All cart, checkout, promotions, and customer session mechanics must remain completely native to Medusa.js to ensure reliable, long-term system upgrades.
2. High-Performance, Modular Next.js Master Templates
Develop 2 to 3 highly optimized, responsive Next.js templates (Premium B2C, Specialized B2C, and Gated B2B Wholesale).
Create a central configuration system (e.g., theme.config.json paired with Tailwind CSS tokens) so we can instantly swap typography, margins, paddings, grids, and primary colors to brand a cloned site.
The "Vibe-Coding" standard: Frontend code must be exceptionally clean, highly modular, and well-commented. It must be built specifically so that we can perform minor visual updates, copy edits, or spin up simple promotional landing pages using AI prompting tools (Cursor, v0) without breaking core application logic or checkout flows.
3. API & Webhook Hand-off
Ensure Medusa.js is configured to dispatch clean, structured webhooks on key events (e.g., order.placed, customer.created) so our in-house automation developer can sync data smoothly to our legacy ERP, CRM, and accounting back-office systems.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
React / Next.js Expert: 4+ years of professional experience building responsive, blazing-fast Next.js apps. Deep understanding of ISR, SSR, and Vercel hosting architectures.
Medusa.js Specialist: Hands-on experience architecting and deploying Medusa.js backends. You must thoroughly understand multi-tenant sales channels, regions, and customized admin panels.
Tailwind CSS Mastery: Expert at utility-first CSS and creating robust theme configuration files.
Clean Code Advocate: You write code that is extremely readable and easy to maintain, anticipating automated AI editing environments (Cursor/v0).
Modern Developer Workflow: Experience utilizing Linear for issue tracking and running clean, highly descriptive Git branches/commit histories.
PROJECT TIMELINE & PHASES
Phase 1 (Weeks 1-3): Deploy Medusa.js backend on Render. Set up initial Sales Channels, database structures, and catalog migrations. Establish testing environments.
Phase 2 (Weeks 4-8): Build the master Next.js templates (B2C and Gated B2B). Implement standard theme configuration files and complete payment gateway integrations.
Phase 3 (Weeks 9-12): Deploy the first two storefronts using the master templates. Test end-to-end checkout, payment routing, and hand-off webhooks to our n8n engineer.
Phase 4 (Weeks 13-16): Spin up and launch the remaining storefronts from the master templates. Ensure total multi-tenant security and transition the project to staging/production environments.
