Senior Backend Developer (Python)

About Us We are a digital health startup building Alakin, a platform for medical workflow automation and patient care coordination, now expanding into insurtech as well. We are growing our distributed engineering team and looking for senior freelance talent who can own their domain with autonomy and rigor. Role Overview We are hiring a Senior Backend Developer with strong experience in Python to help design, build, and scale the backend services powering Alakin. You will own services end-to-end, from architecture to deployment, supporting real-time healthcare workflows used by hospitals and healthcare professionals. What You'll Do - Design, implement, and optimize backend services in Python (FastAPI), supporting real-time healthcare workflows - Model and evolve a multi-tenant PostgreSQL data layer with a focus on data integrity and performance - Design and maintain GraphQL and REST APIs consumed by web and mobile clients - Ensure code quality, testability, and performance across all services - Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation on AWS - Collaborate with product and other engineers to translate product specification into robust technical solutions Requirements - 4+ years of backend development experience in Python - Solid knowledge of FastAPI, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, and scalable backend design - Strong grasp of API design, data modeling, and testing practices (unit, integration) - Comfortable working in a distributed, async-friendly team Fluent in English (technical and spoken) Bonus - React skills - Background in health tech or compliance-aware systems (HDS, GDPR, HIPAA) - Knowledge of event-driven architectures or distributed task queues (e.g. Celery, RabbitMQ) - Experience with FHIR or other healthcare interoperability standards Work Setup This is a freelance / remote engagement. We work async-friendly but expect meaningful overlap with the core team for collaboration, reviews, and planning.
