Senior AI & Automation Engineer, Long-Term Freelance (Backup to Director of AI & Technology)

About us We are a healthcare and life sciences marketing agency serving pharma, biotech, and medtech clients. AI is central to how we operate and how we grow, and our internal AI platform work spans content intelligence tools, sales automation, and client-facing applications. All of it runs in a regulated, security-conscious environment. The role Our Director of AI & Technology currently owns all architecture, development coordination, and deployment for our AI systems. We are looking for one senior freelancer to serve as a long-term technical counterpart and backup: someone who can build alongside her, maintain deep familiarity with our systems, and step in to keep automations, integrations, and applications running when she is unavailable. This is not a one-off project. We want someone who stays engaged over months and years, builds real institutional knowledge of our stack, and grows into greater responsibility as trust is established. What you'll work on Ongoing development and maintenance across our platform, including n8n automation workflows connected to HubSpot, ZoomInfo, Apollo, and Slack; Node.js and React applications hosted in Azure; SharePoint-integrated internal tools built on Microsoft 365; and LLM integrations using the Anthropic and OpenAI APIs, including prompt engineering, enrichment pipelines, and scoring logic. You will also help document systems, troubleshoot workflow failures, and participate in QA cycles before automations go fully live. Required experience You should have strong, demonstrable experience with n8n (or equivalent workflow platforms with willingness to go deep on n8n), the HubSpot API and workflows, Node.js and React, REST APIs and OAuth authentication, and building with LLM APIs in production. You must have excellent written English. Most communication happens asynchronously in Slack and GitHub, and clear writing is non-negotiable. Strongly preferred Experience with Azure services, Microsoft Graph or SharePoint development, and prior work in healthcare, pharma, or another regulated industry where data governance actually matters. Familiarity with least-privilege security practices is a real advantage, because you will be working inside them. How we work Security posture is strict and non-negotiable. All work is delivered through GitHub pull requests reviewed by our Director. Development happens against sandboxed configurations with scoped API credentials that we provision and rotate. An NDA is required. That said, this role is explicitly designed to grow. Freelancers who demonstrate reliability, quality, and sound judgment over an initial engagement period will be considered for expanded responsibility, including participation in deployment processes under supervision. Engagement details Long-term, part-time, with an expected baseline of 15 to 20 hours per week and flexibility to surge during active builds. Availability during 8 AM – 5 PM EST is required.
