WooCommerce Developer Needed

UK Fine Food, Wine & Hamper Business | Freelance / Ongoing | Europe Preferred We are an established UK-based e-commerce business specialising in **fine foods, luxury hampers and wine and we are looking for an experienced **WooCommerce & WordPress Developer to work with us on an ongoing basis. We have worked with the same freelance developer for the past six and a half years He has now retired from freelance work, so we are looking for someone who can take over the technical development and become a long-term part of the business This is not a role for someone with only basic WordPress or WooCommerce experience Our website has evolved considerably over the years and contains a number of bespoke features and customisations. We need somebody who genuinely understands how WooCommerce works at a technical level and is comfortable taking responsibility for an established, live e-commerce platform. What We Need You should have strong experience in: WooCommerce – advanced knowledge is essential WordPress development PHP, JavaScript, HTML and CSS Developing and maintaining custom WooCommerce functionality WooCommerce hooks, filters and customisations Developing or modifying WordPress/WooCommerce plugins** API development and integrations with third-party systems Payment, order, product, customer and checkout integrations Troubleshooting conflicts between plugins, themes and custom code Database and performance optimisation Maintaining and improving an established live e-commerce website Building a **web or mobile app where required, or being technically capable of developing the functionality and integrations needed to support one Understanding security, backups, staging environments and safe deployment of changes to a live commercial website The Important Part We already have people who can handle the creative and design side of the website. We are therefore not looking primarily for a web designer We need a technical WooCommerce developer — somebody who can be given a business requirement or new feature and work out how to build it properly. For example, we may say: We need WooCommerce to communicate with this external system through an API, process this information, update an order and display the result to the customer.” We need somebody who understands how to architect and implement that, rather than relying entirely on finding an off-the-shelf plugin. We also make some use of AI/Claude within our development and business processes, and we are very open to developers who use modern AI development tools intelligently to work faster and more effectively. However, you must have the technical knowledge to understand, test and take responsibility for the code being implemented. About You You must: Have significant demonstrable WooCommerce development experience Be comfortable working with an existing customised WooCommerce installation Be able to understand somebody else's existing code Be able to develop bespoke functionality when an existing plugin isn't suitable Have strong API/integration experience Be capable of investigating and solving problems independently Understand the importance of testing before deploying to a live e-commerce site Be reliable and available when genuine technical problems arise Be fluent in spoken and written English Be prepared to attend an initial Zoom interview We would ideally like somebody based in Europe although we will consider exceptional applicants elsewhere who can work comfortably with UK/European working hours. This Is a Long-Term Opportunity We are not looking for somebody for one isolated project. Our previous developer worked with us for more than six years, and ideally we would like to build a similar relationship with our next developer. There will be periods involving larger development projects and other periods where we simply require maintenance, improvements, troubleshooting and smaller changes. As the business develops, there will also be opportunities to build new functionality, integrations, automation and potentially apps** around our existing e-commerce platform.
