SaaS Platform Modernisation & Workflow Automation

About the Project We operate an established SaaS platform used by customers as well as our internal operations team. As the platform has grown, parts of the existing architecture and codebase have become increasingly difficult to maintain. This is beginning to affect development speed, scalability and the efficiency of some internal workflows. We are looking for a senior full-stack software engineer who can assess the existing platform, identify the highest-priority technical issues and recommend a practical path toward modernising the system. The initial engagement will focus on understanding the current platform, identifying technical debt and architecture risks, and creating a clear roadmap for future development and automation. What We Are Looking For We are not looking for someone simply to complete development tickets. We need an experienced engineer who can understand how the software supports the business, evaluate the existing technical decisions and help us determine the most practical way to improve the platform. The right person should be comfortable working across frontend, backend, database architecture, APIs, cloud infrastructure and third-party integrations. Strong communication is also important, as technical recommendations will need to be explained clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Current Environment Our current technology environment includes technologies such as: · TypeScript · React · Next.js · Node.js · NestJS · PostgreSQL · REST APIs and third-party integrations · AWS/cloud infrastructure · Docker · Existing internal business workflows and automation There may also be opportunities to introduce additional workflow automation and AI-assisted functionality where it provides a clear business benefit. Key Challenges Some of the areas we want the successful engineer to assess include: · Technical debt within the existing platform · Areas of the architecture that are becoming difficult to maintain · Backend and API scalability · Frontend architecture and maintainability · Database structure and performance · Third-party integrations and dependencies · Security and reliability · Development and deployment processes · Manual internal workflows that could be automated · Opportunities to improve development speed without compromising stability Initial Engagement The first phase of the project will focus on a technical assessment and modernisation roadmap. The engineer will review the existing system and work with us to understand both the technical environment and the business requirements behind the platform. Expected areas of work include: · Review the existing application architecture · Assess the frontend and backend codebase · Identify significant technical debt · Review database architecture and integrations · Identify scalability and reliability risks · Assess security and maintainability concerns · Identify workflow automation opportunities · Recommend architecture improvements · Recommend improvements to development and deployment processes · Prioritise the most important technical improvements · Develop a practical implementation roadmap for the next phase Expected Outcome At the end of the initial engagement, we want to have a clear understanding of: 1. The most important technical issues affecting the platform 2. Which areas should be modernised first 3. Which technical debt presents the greatest business risk 4. Where automation could reduce manual operational work 5. What architecture changes would improve scalability and maintainability 6. How future development should be prioritised 7. What the next implementation phase should involve The goal is to leave the initial engagement with a clear, commercially practical technical roadmap rather than simply a list of development tasks. We are looking for someone who can enter an existing environment, understand how the system works, identify what genuinely needs improvement and avoid unnecessary redevelopment. Potential Ongoing Work This initial project is intended to establish the technical roadmap. If the engagement is successful, there is significant potential for continued work implementing the recommended platform modernisation, automation and development improvements.
