About us
We're a pre-launch B2C EdTech startup. Our growth is 100% organic: community-led (Reddit, Facebook, Discord) plus search and AI-search visibility. No paid ads.
We need a strategist to own the organic growth plan end to end. Execution support exists: a small team including two VAs handles content creation, posting, and daily community operations. Your job is the brain, not the hands.
Shortlisted candidates receive a company brief with full context before the interview.
This is NOT a content creator or social media posting role. If your portfolio is mainly content you made or accounts you posted to, this is not the right fit.
What you'll own
1. The strategy (your core job)
Build the full organic growth plan: which channels, in what order, with what message, and why
Own positioning and messaging for our audience
Adapt the plan weekly based on real data — kill what isn't working, double down on what is
Deliver a written growth strategy early in the engagement
2. Keyword and AI-search visibility
Keyword research: search volume, intent, long-tail opportunities in our niche
AI-search (GEO) basics: track whether AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) mention products like ours, understand what drives those citations, and build our visibility there
Brief the team on what content and community activity feeds search and AI visibility
3. Tracking and reporting
Set up and enforce UTM discipline, GA4 basics, and per-platform analytics
Design our attribution approach, including a "how did you hear about us" survey (community traffic mostly shows up as untraceable direct traffic — you should know why, and what to do about it)
Define KPIs per growth phase and deliver a weekly written report: what's working, what isn't, what changes
4. Directing the team
Set priorities and quality standards for the execution team
Write simple SOPs and briefs so execution runs without you touching every post
QC community content before it goes out
Requirements
4+ years in growth, SEO, or organic marketing with at least one product or client where you owned the strategy (not just executed someone else's)
Demonstrated keyword research skill and working knowledge of how AI-search visibility differs from classic SEO
Analytics fluency: GA4 (or equivalent), UTM conventions, and honest reporting — including what can't be measured
Strong written English; your main outputs are strategy docs, briefs, and reports
Experience managing or directing freelancers/VAs
Familiarity with Reddit and Facebook community norms (you won't post daily, but you set the rules for people who do)
Nice to have: B2C or consumer-SaaS experience; hands-on GEO/AI-visibility tracking; launch or waitlist experience.
Hard rules
We operate strictly within platform terms and FTC endorsement rules: no fake personas, no purchased engagement or reviews, no undisclosed promotion, no astroturfing. Strategies built on any of the above will not be used, and proposing them ends the engagement.
How we'll hire
Shortlisted candidates receive our company brief and get a short interview.
Finalists complete a paid trial audit (~2–3 hours at your hourly rate): we share our current plan summary; you return a one-page teardown (what's wrong or missing) plus a 30-day plan with the KPIs you'd track.
We start with a 4-week paid trial period, then move to ongoing.
Screening questions (answer all in your proposal)
Describe one product where you owned the organic growth strategy end to end. What did you decide, what did you change along the way, and what were the measurable results?
How is being cited by AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews) different from ranking in Google? Name one thing that helps AI visibility that classic SEO ignores.
Our analytics show 60% of traffic as "direct." What's likely happening, and how would you get real signal on where users come from?
What's the first thing you'd want to know about our product before writing the strategy?
Start your proposal with the word "Compass" so we know you read this post.
