Project Overview
We are looking for a highly experienced Azure/.NET engineer to build a robust document processing backend for an AI-powered engineering document review application.
The system processes complex engineering drawings, technical specifications, and multi-page PDF documents, extracting structured information that can be used by downstream AI and rule-based validation systems.
The application already has an existing web infrastructure. Your primary responsibility will be designing, developing, testing, and integrating the document processing pipeline.
This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong experience with Azure, advanced PDF processing, OCR, and structured data extraction.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop a scalable document processing pipeline using C#/.NET and Azure.
Extract text, tables, dimensions, annotations, and metadata from vector-based engineering PDFs.
Implement OCR fallback for scanned documents using Azure AI Document Intelligence.
Identify drawing sheet numbers, titles, revisions, and technical information.
Process bounding boxes, coordinates, and spatial relationships to accurately associate extracted data.
Transform extracted information into consistent, structured JSON.
Develop asynchronous processing workflows using Azure Functions, Blob Storage, and messaging services.
Integrate the document processing engine with existing backend systems.
Implement error handling, retries, logging, and performance optimization.
Build automated tests to validate extraction accuracy and handle complex document layouts.
Required Technical Skills
C# / .NET / ASP.NET Core
Python
Azure AI Document Intelligence
PDF Parsing – PyMuPDF, pdfplumber, iText, or equivalent
Azure Functions
Azure Blob Storage
Azure Queue Storage / Service Bus
Bounding Box & Spatial Analysis
SQL Server & JSON Schema
Automated Testing & Data Extraction Validation
Preferred Experience
Previous experience building production-grade PDF or document extraction systems.
Experience processing engineering drawings, architectural plans, or technical documentation.
Strong knowledge of vector PDFs versus scanned PDFs.
Experience extracting complex tables and associating text with coordinates.
Familiarity with engineering units, dimensions, and technical data normalization.
Experience with Azure-based asynchronous processing pipelines.
Ability to independently design and implement reliable backend architecture.
What We're Looking For
We need someone who has personally implemented similar systems, not someone who has only experimented with Azure OCR APIs.
You should be comfortable discussing your technical decisions, explaining challenges you encountered, and demonstrating how you solved real-world document extraction problems.
Strong spoken English is important because you will participate in technical discussions and explain implementation decisions clearly.
You must be able to take ownership of the document processing backend from architecture through implementation, testing, and integration.
How to Apply
A 2–3 minute Loom video is mandatory.
In your video, please:
Introduce yourself and briefly describe your technical background.
Explain one relevant document processing or Azure-based project you personally developed.
Describe the architecture, technologies used, and your exact responsibilities.
Explain one significant technical challenge and how you solved it.
Please also answer the following questions in your proposal:
Have you built a production system using Azure AI Document Intelligence? What did it process?
How would you handle extraction from vector PDFs versus scanned engineering drawings?
Have you worked with bounding boxes, coordinate-based matching, or complex table extraction?
What Azure services have you used to build asynchronous document processing pipelines?
We are particularly interested in engineers with directly relevant production experience who can independently own this component.
We are open to an ongoing engagement if the initial development phase is successful.
