Senior PHP/JavaScript developer with music theory knowledge — Europe — Long-term

Budget: $20.0 - $35.0 HOURLY / AS_NEEDED ⭐ 4.99 (119) Denmark

php, javascript, mysql

Preferred qualifications

  • Location: Europe
  • Experience: Expert
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS Please apply only if you are based in Europe, have strong experience with PHP & JavaScript, and have a solid knowledge of music theory (music notation, rhythm, intervals, chords, scales, key signatures, time signatures, etc.). Experience with MySQL, HTML/CSS, Git, and Linux/Apache is highly beneficial. Experience with Joomla, particularly custom components and modules is also an advantage, but not a requirement. ABOUT THE JOB Musicca.com is a free music education platform used by millions of people each month. I'm looking for an experienced developer to help maintain and further develop the platform, with a particular focus on its interactive music exercises. The platform is built on Joomla, with several custom components and modules, including a large custom-built exercise system. The codebase includes PHP, JavaScript, MySQL, and HTML/CSS. TYPICAL WORK The work will include ongoing maintenance, bug fixing, and gradual modernization of the existing codebase. There are also several one-off projects, such as improving the schools system, upgrading PHP & Joomla, and implementing automated reminder emails to users. The majority of your time is expected to be spent on the interactive music exercises, with a mix of ongoing improvements, bug fixes, and development of new exercise features. WORK PROCESSES You will work mainly with me, the owner of Musicca. I write the requirements for development tasks and review the completed work. You will also occasionally work with Jesper, who developed the current exercise system and is available a few hours per month for specialized exercise-related tasks. The interactive tools and virtual instruments on the website are maintained by another developer. You are not expected to work on these, apart from occasional minor support, for example where a tool needs to interact with the database. I’m looking for someone who is comfortable understanding, maintaining, and improving an existing codebase rather than rewriting everything from scratch. We will start with some paid tasks as a trial period. If we work well together, the role can grow into a larger long-term position and potentially a full-time role, depending on your availability. Working hours are flexible, but you must be based in Europe so our time zones overlap reasonably well. Communication can mainly be written. I currently use Telegram for day-to-day communication, with online meetings when useful. HOW TO APPLY When applying, please briefly include: 1. Your country 2. Your experience, with focus on PHP, JavaScript, MySQL, HTML/CSS, Git, Linux/Apache, and Joomla 3. Your musical background and music-theory knowledge 4. Your weekly availability 5. Your hourly rate
