AI Application Developer

Job Title: AI Application Developer / Automation Engineer Type: Part-Time or Full-Time Timezone Coverage: Australian Time Zone - Perth Start Date: Immediate upon successful selection Requirements Australian Time Zone Availability – Must be able to work during Perth business hours. Strong Technical Experience – Must be able to read, understand, debug, and extend an existing codebase. This is not a prompt-only AI builder role. AI Development Experience – Hands-on experience with LLM APIs, AI-assisted coding, and AI agent workflows. Agency or Freelancing Experience – Minimum 12 months of agency or freelance experience preferred, particularly where you have worked directly with clients or business owners. Independent Problem Solver – Able to take requirements, ask the right questions, build solutions, test them, and identify when clarification is needed. Role Overview We are looking for a highly capable AI Application Developer / Automation Engineer to work directly with the General Manager of an established Australian construction-related business. The business is consolidating its operations into a custom internal platform and is looking for someone who can help build, debug, improve, and eventually automate the system. This is a collaborative product-building role, not a traditional VA or hand-off development position. The General Manager has deep industry knowledge, product vision, and a strong understanding of the business workflows, but does not write code. You will provide the technical expertise needed to turn those ideas and requirements into working software. You will initially work through a structured ticket queue, build features, review the work with the General Manager, and iterate based on feedback. Over time, the role will expand into AI agents, workflow automation, email processing, integrations, and human-in-the-loop systems. Key Responsibilities Build, modify, and improve features within an existing web application Read, understand, debug, and extend existing code Work with GitHub and modern AI-assisted development workflows Translate business requirements into practical technical solutions Work directly with the General Manager to clarify requirements and review completed work Maintain and improve integrations between databases, spreadsheets, APIs, and business systems Help consolidate fragmented business processes into a centralized operating system Build automation workflows using tools such as n8n, Make, or similar platforms Develop AI-powered workflows and agentic systems with human approval before actions are executed Build sandboxed email workflows, including email parsing, classification, and data ingestion Integrate LLMs and APIs into business workflows Test, troubleshoot, and refine applications before deployment Identify bugs, edge cases, and potential reliability issues Recommend improvements to architecture, development tools, and system design Help evaluate when to use no-code/low-code tools versus custom development Document important systems, workflows, and technical decisions Take ownership of assigned tickets and projects from requirements through completion Clearly communicate when something is unclear rather than making assumptions Required Skills & Qualifications Strong ability to read, debug, and modify existing code Experience developing or maintaining web applications Hands-on experience with AI-assisted coding tools, particularly Claude Code or similar tools Experience working with LLM APIs and AI agent workflows Strong understanding of APIs, webhooks, databases, and data flows Experience with automation platforms such as n8n, Make, Zapier, or similar Comfortable working with Git/GitHub Experience connecting multiple systems and services together Strong problem-solving and systems-thinking ability Ability to understand business processes and translate them into technical requirements Strong written and spoken English Comfortable communicating directly with a business owner/general manager Willingness to ask questions when requirements are unclear Strong attention to detail Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to work consistently during Australian business hours Preferred Skills Experience building AI agents or agentic workflows Experience with LLM APIs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar Experience with Supabase, PostgreSQL, or other databases Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, SQL, or similar programming languages Experience building internal business tools or SaaS products Experience with email APIs and email parsing/ingestion Experience with spreadsheet APIs and data migration Experience working with construction, engineering, architecture, drafting, or other technical industries Experience taking an internal business tool and turning it into a commercial SaaS product Experience working with non-technical founders or business owners Experience evaluating and migrating between development platforms What Makes This Role Different This is not a typical automation VA position.
