Custom WordPress Developer for Editorial & Media Website
We are looking for an experienced WordPress developer to help us build and launch a professional, fast, and scalable website for our business.
The goal is to create a strong first version efficiently, without unnecessary complexity or over-engineering. We want someone who can understand the business objective, recommend practical technical solutions, and focus on what is actually needed for the initial launch.
What we need
WordPress development and customization.
Clean, responsive, mobile-friendly implementation.
Customization of the theme and/or existing components when appropriate.
PHP, CSS, and JavaScript as needed.
Good website structure, performance, and usability.
Basic SEO and technical best practices.
Integration of necessary WordPress plugins without relying on excessive plugins.
Testing, optimization, and bug fixing before launch.
A website that is easy to maintain and can be expanded later if the business requires it.
Content Management — Important
A key requirement of this project is that our team must be able to manage the website independently after launch, without requiring a developer for normal editorial tasks.
We need to be able to:
Create, edit, publish, and delete articles/content.
Upload and manage images and other media.
Manage categories and tags.
Add and update featured content.
Manage the relevant content fields and information from WordPress.
Make normal editorial updates without touching code.
The website should therefore be structured as a proper editorial/content management system, rather than as a collection of manually designed pages.
Normal content publishing and management should not require recurring developer intervention.
Design and Visual Direction
We already have a defined visual direction and basic brand guidelines, including the overall visual style and color palette.
We are therefore not looking to develop the brand identity from scratch.
The developer should be able to translate the existing visual direction into a clean, professional, and consistent WordPress implementation, while also providing practical recommendations when something can be improved from a usability or technical perspective.
Initial Website Scope
The initial version is expected to include approximately 5–7 core pages, based on the final website structure and business requirements.
The exact number and structure of pages will be defined during the initial planning.
We are intentionally keeping the first version focused on the essential content and functionality required to launch the business, rather than adding unnecessary pages or features.
The goal is to launch a professional and functional first version efficiently, with the possibility of adding improvements later based on actual business needs and results.
How We Want to Work
Start with a clearly defined first version/MVP.
Prioritize the highest-impact elements first.
Avoid unnecessary custom development when a reliable existing solution is sufficient.
Work in clear milestones with visible progress.
Communicate clearly about what is necessary, what is optional, and what can wait until a later stage.
We value efficiency, good judgment, and quality of execution more than simply spending more hours.
We want a developer who can identify simpler and more efficient solutions when appropriate.
We prefer a developer who can work independently and solve problems rather than requiring step-by-step instructions for every task.
Important: This is not intended to be an open-ended or indefinite project. We want to launch a strong first version within a reasonable timeframe, then evaluate future improvements based on actual business needs and results.
Ideal Developer
We are looking for an intermediate-level WordPress developer who:
Has strong practical WordPress development experience.
Understands WordPress beyond basic page builders.
Can work with PHP, CSS, and JavaScript when necessary.
Has experience structuring websites for ongoing content management.
Communicates clearly in English.
Can work independently and meet agreed milestones.
Understands the balance between quality, functionality, speed, and budget.
Please Include
When applying, please provide:
2–4 relevant WordPress projects you have developed.
A brief explanation of your role in those projects.
Whether you have experience with editorial, media, magazine, publishing, or content-heavy websites.
Your estimated timeline for this project.
Your proposed fixed price.
Any important technical recommendations you would make based on this description.
We are particularly interested in developers who can demonstrate actual development and customization work, rather than projects built primarily by installing and configuring a page builder.
A visual reference document is attached to help you understand the project's visual direction. Detailed technical specifications and website architecture will be shared with shortlisted candidates.
