Build a File Server from Scratch — Node.js/TypeScript, for a Messaging Platform We run a communication platform (business↔client messaging with file exchange) and want a new file server designed and built from the ground up — a project you own end to end, from architecture to production. What you'll build: a standalone Node.js/TypeScript service that handles all file traffic for the platform: - Uploads with resumable transfer (tus protocol) alongside plain single-request POST - Downloads served directly to clients — with a local filesystem cache with rotation in front of S3-compatible object storage, no storage links exposed - On-the-fly image scaling on download, image dimension detection on upload - Authorization of every transfer against our main server over a persistent WebSocket (token-based protocol — documented, with a reference implementation to integrate against) - Designed for ~10k concurrent connections: streaming I/O, backpressure, connection-pool discipline - Deployment: nginx, Docker Compose, Linux VPS, GitHub Actions CI/CD You make the architectural calls — storage layout, cache eviction, scaling approach — and defend them. We review designs and integrate, we don't micromanage. You should have: - Strong Node.js + TypeScript; HTTP servers, streams, binary I/O - Experience with S3-compatible storage, nginx, Docker - Comfort owning a service in production on a Linux box (logs, monitoring, incident debugging) Nice to have: tus protocol, image processing (sharp/libvips), load testing. A greenfield service with a clear spec, a real user base from day one, and an existing end-to-end test suite to validate against. Long-term collaboration expected — you build it, you run it.
