Title: Junior Developer, AI-Assisted Internal Tools and Automation (Part Time, Remote)
Rate: $15 to $20 USD per hour depending on experience
Commitment: Part time, project based. Hours vary by what is in flight.
Location: Fully remote. You must be available for meetings between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM US Pacific, Monday through Friday.
About the role
We are an education technology company running a college admissions coaching program. We build and maintain the platform our coaches and families use every day, plus a set of internal tools that keep coaching, CX, and finance operations running.
This is part time, as needed work. We bring you in on scoped projects, you deliver them, and we come back when the next one is ready. There is no guaranteed weekly minimum. If the work goes well, the projects keep coming.
We build with AI. Almost everything we ship is built with AI coding tools, which means we care less about how much syntax you have memorized and more about whether you can direct these tools, verify what comes back, and fix it when it is wrong.
The kind of projects you would take on
Internal dashboards that surface operational data to coaching and CX teams
Scheduled jobs and automations: daily reports, Slack notifications, sync monitors
API integrations between our platform, our data warehouse, and third party tools
Moving existing low code automations into maintained in house scripts
Data backfills and cleanup work against our warehouse
This is hands-on build work. You will be given scoped, defined tasks and expected to deliver them without step by step direction.
First project
Standing up a staging environment for our internal applications. That means:
A staging environment that mirrors production closely enough to be trusted for testing
A mock data set realistic enough to exercise real workflows, with no live customer data in it
A repeatable way to reset or reseed that data so the environment stays usable over time
Written documentation other developers can follow to get access, deploy to staging, and test their own work there
We want this to become the environment the rest of the team defaults to before anything reaches production. You would own both the setup and the process around it.
What we are looking for
Required:
You build with AI coding tools daily (Claude, Cursor, or similar) and can point to something real you shipped that way
You can read code and explain what it does, including code an AI wrote for you
You can tell when AI output is wrong and debug it, rather than regenerating and hoping
You can read SQL and understand what a query returns and why. You will not be writing complex queries from scratch, but you need to recognize when a result looks wrong
Comfortable in a terminal: SSH into a server, move around a filesystem, schedule a cron job
Git, with a commit history someone else can follow
Fluent English, spoken and written. You will be on live calls with our team and writing your own updates in Slack
Strong internet access, 100 Mb/s download and 20 Mb/s upload minimum
Must pass a criminal background check if selected for the role
Helpful but not required:
Setting up staging or test environments, seeding mock data, or writing developer onboarding docs
Slack API, Google Workspace APIs, or similar integration work
DigitalOcean or comparable VPS experience
Replacing Zapier, Make, or JotForm automations with custom code
Querying against a data warehouse
What matters as much as any of the above:
You ask for what you need instead of waiting to be unblocked
You make a reasonable call when a spec is incomplete, then flag the assumption
You care whether the thing you built is actually useful to the person using it
Rate
$15 to $20 USD per hour, set by your experience and the complexity of the work. Hours are logged and paid per project. We are stating the range up front so nobody invests time in a process that does not fit their number.
Hiring process
Application review
One call with the hiring manager (45 minutes). We will walk through something you have built and talk through how you would approach the staging environment project.
Offer for the first project
How to apply
Send your resume and a portfolio of what you have built. Links to live tools, repos, or short walkthrough videos are all fine. If it was built with AI tools, say so, we consider that a plus.
