AI-Native Senior Adobe Commerce (Magento) Developer

IWD Agency is a premium US ecommerce development agency. We build and scale Magento and Adobe Commerce stores for serious merchants. We are looking for a senior developer who does something most developers can't: engineer with AI as a core part of their workflow, not an afterthought. This is a build-first role with light, direct client contact. The majority of your time is spent building. You will also answer client questions on tickets and occasionally join a call to gather technical requirements. We are not asking you to be an account manager or a salesperson. We handle the relationship. We need you to build excellent work and communicate clearly about it. This is not a role for someone who occasionally pastes a question into ChatGPT. We want a developer who has rebuilt their workflow around AI: writing, reviewing, testing, and shipping Magento code faster and cleaner than a traditional developer can, while keeping full command of what the code actually does. What you'll do Engineering (the core of the role) - Build, extend, and maintain Adobe Commerce (Magento 2) stores: custom modules, theme work, API integrations, checkout, and performance tuning. - Handle migrations, third-party integrations (ERP, PIM, payment, shipping), and version upgrades. Debug production issues on live, high-traffic stores and find root causes fast. - Use AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or your own stack) to ship faster and cleaner, while owning the quality and security of everything you produce. - Propose ways AI can improve our delivery: faster module scaffolding, automated testing, code review, documentation, and merchant-facing features like AI search or product recommendations. Client communication (a supporting part of the role, not the core) - Respond to client questions on tickets clearly and professionally when they touch your work. - Join the occasional client call to gather technical requirements, so you build the right thing the first time. - Help scope incoming requests: give realistic estimates and flag technical risks early. Who you are - You have shipped real Adobe Commerce / Magento 2 work for real merchants, not tutorials or personal projects. - You know PHP, MySQL, Magento's architecture (dependency injection, plugins, observers, service contracts), and modern front-end (Knockout, Luma or Hyva, JavaScript). - You already build with AI every day and can show us how it changes your output. - Your written and spoken English is strong. You can answer a client's ticket professionally and hold your own on a technical requirements call. You don't need to be a polished presenter. - You need to be clear, accurate, and easy to work with. - You write clean, tested, documented code, hit deadlines, and flag blockers early. Bonus points - Experience with Hyva themes, Adobe Commerce Cloud, or headless / PWA builds. - Experience integrating AI into a live store (semantic search, recommendations, content generation, support). - Prior agency experience, especially as a lead or senior developer. - Familiarity with Shopify Plus or BigCommerce, since we work across the ecommerce space. How we work with AI (read this before applying) We expect you to use AI heavily, and to be fully accountable for the result. If AI writes it, you own it. We want engineers who use AI to move faster and think bigger, not to skip the thinking.
