Infrastructure Software Engineer (Python, Linux & Bare-Metal Systems)

Project Overview Seeking an experienced Infrastructure Software Engineer with strong Python development skills to build and maintain automation systems for large-scale physical server infrastructure. The project focuses on software that provisions, configures, tests, and manages bare-metal servers across complex infrastructure environments. You will work closely with systems, networking, and hardware teams to develop reliable automation tools and production-ready infrastructure software. The ideal freelancer has hands-on experience with Linux systems, server hardware management, network boot workflows, and infrastructure automation. Responsibilities - Python Development: Design, develop, and maintain backend services and automation tools for infrastructure management. - Hardware Provisioning: Build systems for server provisioning, configuration, testing, and lifecycle management. - Bare-Metal Systems: Develop and troubleshoot software that operates directly on physical server environments. - Linux & Shell Scripting: Integrate with Linux-based systems using Bash and other low-level tools. - Networking: Implement and maintain workflows involving IPv4/IPv6, DHCP, DNS, PXE, and network-based server booting. - Hardware Management Integration: Develop integrations with Baseboard Management Controllers (BMCs), IPMI-compatible interfaces, and HTTP-based management protocols. - CI/CD & Deployment: Build and maintain automated testing, continuous integration, and deployment pipelines for infrastructure software. - Infrastructure Data Management: Design and integrate NoSQL databases for storing system state, inventory, and orchestration data. - Architecture Support: Develop and troubleshoot software for ARM64-based systems. - Documentation & Reliability: Document technical workflows, investigate complex infrastructure issues, and improve system reliability. Required Skills & Experience - Strong professional experience developing production software with Python. - Solid knowledge of Linux systems administration and shell scripting. - Hands-on experience with bare-metal servers, server provisioning, or low-level infrastructure software. - Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including IPv4/IPv6, DHCP, DNS, PXE, and network boot processes. - Experience integrating with hardware management controllers and protocols, including BMC and IPMI-style interfaces. - Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and production deployment practices. - Experience working with NoSQL databases and distributed system state management. - Ability to troubleshoot complex issues involving software, hardware, operating systems, and networking. - Strong problem-solving skills, technical documentation abilities, and independent task ownership. Preferred Qualifications - Experience building or operating automation systems for large-scale infrastructure environments. - Familiarity with ARM64 platforms and production deployments. - Experience with hardware testing, validation, factory provisioning, or server lifecycle automation. - Background in infrastructure engineering, platform engineering, or internal developer tooling. - Contributions to open-source projects or infrastructure-related software. Project Deliverables Depending on the agreed scope, deliverables may include: - Python-based infrastructure automation services. - Server provisioning and hardware lifecycle management workflows. - Integrations with server management controllers and network services. - Automated testing and CI/CD pipelines. - NoSQL-backed infrastructure state management components. - Technical documentation, deployment instructions, and troubleshooting guides. Specific milestones, deliverables, and acceptance criteria will be agreed upon before work begins.
